Reprieve for doctors as jail sentence is suspended

The eight doctors union officials who faced jail time for disobeying court orders now have five days to conclude the ongoing negotiations to end the doctors’ strike.

Lady Justice Hellen Wasilwa gave the orders on Thursday morning after the doctors’ lawyers pleaded for more time.

On January 12 the judge granted a suspended sentence to the officials after finding them guilty of calling on their members to go on strike yet she had issued orders stopping it.

The eight officials are Samuel Oroko Oregi, Titus Ondoro, Allan Ochanji, Fredrick Ouma Oluga, Hamisi Mwachonda Chibanzi, Daisy Korir and Evelyne Chege.

The judge had suspended their sentence for two weeks to allow the officials participate in talks aimed at solving the stalemate on the doctors strike which is on its 54th day.

The officials on Wednesday had filed an application seeking the negotiations period to be extended arguing that they are looking forward to an amicable settlement.

The judge on Wednesday directed their lawyer to give copies of the case documents of their new application to parties in the case before she issues further direction today. She also certified it as urgent.
