Facelift for Muthurwa
Motorist will soon have to part with Sh100 to access the bus terminus at Muthurwa market.
The decision follows consultative meetings between Saccos operating matatus at the terminus and a developer.
The private developer intends to install barriers at the market’s main entrance located at the city stadium roundabout in two weeks.
Devoted Indigenous Christian Organisation (DICO) is behind the new initiative alongside other projects at the market.
Dico chairman Michael Seme said well-wishers from overseas had accepted his proposal on giving Muthurwa market a facelift.
He had travelled abroad for church business where he stayed for four years and made connections with the those to fund the project.
“Eight of the 13 saccos operating in this market have agreed that the Sh100 fee is reasonable enough to charge motorists,” he said.
The proceeds will be used in maintenance of the road leading to the terminus which has been in a deplorable state for years,” he added.
According to Mr Seme, the plan is to repair the road then have a sustainable way of getting funds to repair and maintain it for the years to come.
Already, the county government has approved its implementation.
The project is aimed at restoring the bus terminus that has been characterised by congestion and worn out roads leading to traffic jams.
Aside from the dilapidated road, illegitimate dumpsites sprouting at the terminus have been blamed for the matatu disorder.
Peter Gachie, a matatu operator at Muthurwa market said vehicles are blocked from accessing the bus terminus because of the many dumpsites around.
