Facelift for Uhuru gardens ahead of Kenya@50 fete

Renovations at Uhuru gardens started on Thursday in preparation for the Kenya@50 celebrations.

Uhuru gardens is where the flag was first raised on the eve of December 12, 1963 and will be the centre of activity at this year’s golden jubilee celebrations.

The committee in charge of Kenya @50 celebrations visited the gardens on Thursday to assess its condition.

According to Cyrus Musyoka, the assistant site manager, renovation works will continue for two weeks before a visit by President Kenyatta on the 11th December.

“We have contracted different companies which will be involved in renewing the garden and make it look as it was fifty years ago” he said.

The committee plans to renovate two monuments in the gardens , the 25 years of Uhuru Monument of 1988 and the 20th anniversary monument of 1983 which were erected during President Moi era.

Mr Musyoka said the government plans to install CCTV cameras around the garden with the two weeks for security purposes.

Visits to the gardens were stopped on Wednesday to allow for the renovations.

The government plans to have a three-day holiday from December 11th to 13th the jubilee celebration.

The climax of the celebrations will be during the December 12 Jamhuri day.
