How Cord brigade snubbed Raila’s M-Pesa harambee for teachers

The solidarity account set up by Cord leader Raila Odinga to help off-set teacher’s salaries during their protracted 5-week strike has netted Sh1.2 million as of Tuesday this week.

But the raw data released by ODM director of communications Philip Etale shows that the call to stand with the striking teachers, whose salaries had been stopped by their employer, the Teachers Service Commission, was largely ignored by virtually all Cord leaders including co-principal Moses Wetangula.

Mr Odinga and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, also a cord principal, donated Sh100,000 each as promised. Mr Wetangula’s name is missing from the list of contributors.

The other Cord leaders who made contributions are Siaya Senator James Orengo who gave Sh49,800, Machakos Senator who contributed Sh50,000.

Other notable contributors are political activist Boniface Mwangi and vocal Nairobi lawyer Edwin Sifuna with Sh1,000 each.

Thousands of wananchi gave their donations, some as low as Sh10, while others requested Safaricom to reverse their transactions.
