A 60-year-old woman who allegedly conned her Instagram follower of Sh72,493 in a fake phone deal got a reprieve after fraud charges against her were withdrawn.

Florence Kwamboka Nyachoi was charged with obtaining the money from Hafswa Yusuf under false pretences on diverse dates February 20 and 22 this year jointly with others at large.

Ms Nyachoi and her accomplices allegedly obtained the cash with the intent to defraud, purporting to be in a position to import an Apple iPhone for Ms Yusuf knowing the same was false.

Ms Yusuf’s daughter who studies abroad needed a phone and saw an advertisement on Instagram.

She engaged the telephone number shared on the advert and shared it with her mother.

Ms Yusuf was to pay for the phone and the same was to be delivered to her daughter.

She went ahead and sent the money through bank transfer to bank accounts shared by the suspects and more through Mpesa.

The suspect switched off the phone prompting Ms Yusuf to report the matter to the police and the matter was taken up by the Langata Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) who traced and arrested Ms Nyachoi after investigations.

Ms Nyachoi denied the charges before Kibera Chief Magistrate Anne Mwangi and the charges were withdrawn under section 204 of the penal code after Ms Yusuf said she had been paid the money.
