JSC chiefs to earn Sh370,000 each in Hague
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) will spend at least Sh3.3 million on allowances for its commissioners camping in The Hague to determine who the next Chief Justice will be.
The nine left for the Dutch city, where Kenya is also making initial submissions before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in a case in which Somalia has sued it over a maritime boundary, on Saturday.
But the choice of the retreat venue means each commissioner will earn a daily allowance of $747 (Sh74,700) for every day they will be in the Netherlands.
The panel is expected back in the country on Thursday, meaning every one of them will make about $3,735 (Sh373,500) from the trip.
The commission normally comprises 11 members but this team is composed of nine because the CJ, who is usually its president, is yet to be appointed following the retirement of Dr Willy Mutunga this year.
The entourage includes Court of Appeal Judge Mohammed Warsame, High Court Judge Aggrey Muchelule, magistrate Emily Ominde, Attorney-General Prof Githu Muigai, Public Service Commission chairperson Prof Margaret Kobia, Prof Tom Ojienda, Ms Winnie Guchu, Ms Mercy Ndeche and Mr Kipng’etich Bett.
Commissioner Dr Smokin Wanjala did not travel because he is a candidate for the position.
