In Kenya, a select group of men are boldly challenging gender norms through their unique style of entertainment.

From wearing makeup and wigs to bodysuits, they have embraced femininity in their performances, including cross-dressing.

Let’s meet these trailblazers:

Comedian Eric Omondi

In August 2022, Kenyan Comedian Eric Omondi sparked a whirlwind of reactions among his viewers with a bold cross-dressing performance that quickly went viral across social media platforms.

In his latest comedic escapade, Omondi, accompanied by two equally enthusiastic companions, took center stage dancing fervently to the infectious beats of Beyonce’s iconic anthem, ‘Single Ladies’.

Clad in his signature blonde wig and impeccably made-up face, Omondi exuded confidence in a striking red bodysuit, while his supporting ladies dazzled in matching white ensembles.

With each move, Omondi’s infectious laughter filled the air as he skillfully twerked and grooved to Beyonce’s empowering lyrics, commanding attention with every dip and sway.

While Omondi’s choreography was undoubtedly well-calculated and flawlessly executed, it was not without its potential critics.

This wasn’t the first time Omondi had raised eyebrows with his boundary-pushing performances.

Just days earlier, on 3rd August, he had already captured the public’s attention with a show-stopping appearance, donning makeup and a wig with a finesse that rivaled even the most seasoned beauty queens.

Singer Bahati

In July 2023, the Kenyan reality TV star and aspiring politician, Kevin Kioko, widely recognized as Bahati, found himself at the center of controversy following his latest skit alongside his fiancé Diana Marua.

In a video, Bahati dared to challenge gender norms by boldly donning a body-hugging red dress, a sleek black wig, high heels, and vibrant red lipstick while gracefully holding his girlfriend’s handbag.

Completing his ensemble with dazzling diamond accessories, Bahati aimed to humorously depict the experience many men face when asked to carry their partner’s belongings.

However, the video didn’t quite land as intended. Instead of laughter, it sparked a wave of criticism, with netizens accusing Bahati of crossing boundaries with his portrayal of femininity.

Kabi Wajesus

In July 2023, Kabi WaJesus, a prominent content creator, found himself under intense scrutiny after making a bold fashion statement by donning a yellow dress and complementing it with vibrant red lipstick.

In an Instagram video, Kabi WaJesus embarked on what appeared to be a playful yet controversial challenge.

However, instead of receiving applause, he faced a barrage of criticism from fans in the comment section.

Many accused him of imitating the ‘wife’s handbag challenge,’ a trend popularized by the Bahatis, where men are depicted holding their partners’ handbags, often resulting in them donning feminine attire like lipstick and dresses.

Terence Creative

In July 2023, Terence Creative, a prominent Content Creator, caused a stir by sharing a video of himself donning a striking white dress.

Terence Creative’s choice to incorporate cross-dressing into his content took on added significance as he used the platform to promote a specific product.
