Kenyan producer Giggz Njenga honoured with Grammy certificate for Essence remix

Kenyan producer Joseph “Giggz” Njenga, renowned for his work on the remix of WizKid’s hit song “Essence” featuring Justin Bieber and Tems, has been presented with a Grammy certificate by the Recording Academy.

Giggz shared the news on his Instagram account, expressing his joy at receiving the prestigious recognition.

The certificate, presented by the Recording Academy, specifically acknowledges Joseph “Giggz” Njenga’s role as a recording engineer on the Grammy Award-nominated recording of “Essence” in the category of Best Global Music Performance at the 64th Grammy Awards in 2021.

In his Instagram post, Giggz shared, “The nicest way to start 2024,” accompanied by an image of the certificate that underscores his contribution to the acclaimed remix of “Essence.”

“Essence (Remix)” emerged as a collaborative effort between WizKid, Justin Bieber, and Tems.

The remix, released on August 13, 2021, added a global touch to the original track, featuring Tems alone.

The song found its place not only as a single but also as the final track on the deluxe edition of WizKid’s album, “Made In Lagos.”

The story behind Bieber’s involvement in the remix adds an intriguing layer to the success of “Essence.” DJ Tay James, mentor to DJ Alizay, introduced Bieber to the track, claiming it to be the “song of the summer.”

Upon hearing it during a birthday vacation weekend, Bieber was instantly captivated. DJ Tay James recalls the swift collaboration process, mentioning that WizKid gave his blessings for the remix.

Bieber said having heard the song on a Thursday, recorded his verse by the following Monday.

The efficient collaboration between DJ Tay James, Josh Gudwin, and the instrumental contributions from WizKid’s team culminated in the Grammy-nominated remix that resonated globally.
