MCAs have their way as Kidero yields to passage of contentious budget

The Nairobi County Assembly has finally passed a contentious budget whose delayed approval had threatened to paralyze City Hall’s operations.

The Sh35.9 billion budget estimates for the 2016/2017 financial year was passed and approved on Wednesday inclusive of Sh5.1 billion set aside in the last three budgets for Ward Development Fund.

However, the passage of the budget came after the deadline (June 30) had elapsed following a boycott by the MCAs who demanded for the exclusion of the Ward Development Fund.

APPROVED BUDGET

In the approved budget, Sh23.15 billion has been set aside for recurrent expenditure while Sh12.8 billion has been aside for development programs.

Nairobi Governor Dr Evans Kidero, who at on point was in a standoff with the MCAs over the budget, thanked the members for passing the budget.

“By passing this budget they have executed their mandate of oversighting and representative roles fully as per the Constitution and Subsidiary Act (County Govt. Act and Public Finance Management Act),” Dr Kidero said.
