KPL players to be feted monthly

Kenyan sports journalists in collaboration with Sport Pesa on Tuesday launched the Kenya Premier League Player of the Year Award that will see the best premier players feted each month.

In the deal, local journalists will select footballers who have been outstanding during the month.

Winners will be awarded a cash prize of Sh50,000, a personalized trophy and a 42-inch flat screen TV.

Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) chairman Chris Mbaisi said that he was happy to have entered the partnership with Sport Pesa.

“I am happy that this has finally come to pass because it is something that we (sports journalists) have been thinking about for long. We expect that this will greatly improve the quality of our league in general and for our players in particular.

Mbaisi said sports journalists will rely on statistics from the Kenyan Premier League Limited in making their decisions, but that player discipline will be a key requirement for nominated candidates.

“We shall be looking at player performance, his work rate and contribution to the team in making our decisions, but the overriding quality will be discipline. In case of a tie between two players, we shall look at the number of yellow/red cards accumulated by the player during the match,” the Star newspaper editor said.

The awards are scheduled to kick off immediately with the March player of the month to be feted next Tuesday.
