How thugs robbed Mutoko’s Sh500K jewellery
Radio personality Caroline Mutoko is the latest victim of armed gangsters who have been attacking and robbing residents in Nairobi’s upmarket estates.
On Monday night, the presenter was attacked and robbed in her Rosslyn Gardens home by a gang of seven.
Ms Mutoko, who was with her daughter Theodora Nduku, lost several mobile phones, laptops, two television sets and assorted jewellery estimated to be valued at more than Sh500,000 during the 1am incident.
She reported the matter at Nyari police station and was expected to record a comprehensive statement at Gigiri Police station once she had finished her day’s engagements.
The gangsters who were armed with an AK47 rifle and pistols were said to have tied up two security guards manning the radio presenter’s house and then proceeded to cut the metal grills on the windows before gaining access to the living room.
“Once they were inside the house, they took the items in less than 10 minutes. They demanded cash but Ms Mutoko told them she didn’t have any in the house, so they left with the items. Fortunately, nobody was injured during the incident,” said Gigiri Deputy police chief Alice Kimeli.
A neighbour who heard the commotion alerted G4S guards on patrol who fired several times in the air but the gangsters still managed to take off with the items.
Police believe the gangsters used tinsnips to cut the grills before gaining access to the house.
“The grills are very strong so we are still in the process of finding out how they broke them. The gangsters did not leave anything on the scene, but we shall reveal more information as investigations continue,” Ms Kimeli added.
Police suspect the gang that raided Ms Mutoko’s house could be the same one involved in another home invasion within the neighbourhood.
They also suspect the robbery was an inside job, owing to the tight security in the estate and the method and speed of its execution.
“We have reason to believe it was an inside job but we shall know in due course after we are done with our investigations. The guards have already recorded statements and the matter is being pursued with urgency,” added Ms Kimeli.
Ms Mutoko could not be reached for comment. Estate guards barred journalists from accessing the house saying they had strict instructions from the radio presenter not to let anybody in.
