Nairobi County responds to viral video of Kanjo car drama with Tiktoker

The Nairobi County Government has issued a response to the viral video that captured a heated confrontation between one of its inspectorate officers and a female motorist.

County Secretary Patrick Analo addressed the media in his office, acknowledging that the officer was in the wrong for entering the vehicle without the owner’s permission.

However, he also pointed out that the owner should have driven directly to a police station or County Government offices to report the incident.

“While it is wrong for the officer to have entered the vehicle without permission, it is equally wrong to detain someone just because they have illegally entered your car. They should have rushed with the officer to the nearest police station,” Mr Analo stated.

He condemned the actions of both parties involved and emphasized that the county would take disciplinary action against the officer for overstepping his roles.

Mr Analo assured that the disciplinary action would be fair for both the accused officer and the complainant, who is a well-known TikToker using the name Ntazola Gloria.

“There is a report that I’m expecting from that officer and his supervisors, which will inform the disciplinary action to be taken. He needs to explain to us under what circumstances he entered the car.”

In the viral video, the lady can be seen threatening to drive from Nairobi CBD to Ngong, where she resides. Another video shows the lady driving along the Nairobi Expressway with the officer sitting beside her while she continues to express her dissatisfaction and abuse the officer.

“By saying that she is driving that man to Ngong, that also constitutes abduction,” Mr Analo remarked.

The County Secretary further clarified that the law does not allow inspectorate officers to enter any private vehicle without permission. He explained that if the motorist is suspected of attempting to flee during an inspection, they can send an alarm to have the vehicle intercepted.

Regarding the issue of informal traders or hawkers being harassed by inspectorate officers, Mr. Analo mentioned that Governor Johnson Sakaja had been handling the matter. He also stated that the county is in the final stages of relocating them to designated areas.

“We are setting up 2,000 hawking slots developed with sheds at the backstreets of our city. We will also establish designated streets where we allow them to access the CBD within certain hours of the day and certain days of the week.”

He elaborated that this move is aimed at integrating registered Nairobi hawkers, approximately 800 in number, into the economy so they can pay taxes and fees while operating within a more organized framework.
