SNAPPY 7: Qritiqal – I get motivated by those who criticize my music

Kenyan singer and a songwriter, Eric Onyango Omollo, better known as Qritiqal, recently got signed up by Chocolate City.

The artiste who has perfected a unique way of fusing dancehall, reggae, RnB and soul to create feel good music spoke to Nairobi News about his music career.

1. Who is Qritiqal? – Qritiqal is a very passionate musician who is inspired by the different aspects of life. To me everything is inspiring and it does not matter which side it comes from. My sound is diversity.

2. Tell us about signing for Chocolate City and your new song Malkia? – I am glad to be the first Kenyan male artiste to be signed under Chocolate City label and under the label I dropped my new single called Malkia.

3. When did you start your musical journey? – My first single was in 2010. Before that I had done some collaboration with East Coast crew who are based in Mombasa and I must say I have been doing it ever since.

4. How do you describe your genre of music? – What I can say is that my music is very diverse. I do not do only ragamuffin or kapuka, but if I do, it has to have a Kenyan bounce on it.

5. Who do you dream of collaborating with? – Straight up Drake. He is more diverse and I like his composition. I respect his melodies and the fact that he makes simple look amazing.

6. What can you tell the critics who say that you sing using Jamaican patois? – To me it is a side that they will eventually appreciate. They can come out and criticize me but at the end of the day they will one day appreciate my work. Just like a painter who draws a picture or a painting, one day they will come to understand such creations and they will appreciate your work. It is a part of the journey. To me such people are there to motivate me.

7. What should we expect from you in the future? – More music from Qritiqal… more collabos. Basically venturing into different markets, spreading my wings and representing Kenya. So watch out!
