Retired senior AP officer, son, detained after killing casual worker
A retired senior Administration Police Service officer and his son are in custody at the Kabete police station in Nairobi after allegedly killing their relative they accused of stealing a piece of wire mesh.
Retired commissioner of police Michael Mbungua Njau, his son Christopher Njau Mbugua and adopted son Charles Kinyanjui Mwangi are suspected of killing George Njui.
They were arrested by Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) officers at Mr Njau’s home in Riruta, Nairobi on January 4.
Njui died on December 23, 2023, after he was allegedly tortured by the three at Mr Njau’s home after he was accused of stealing a wire mesh valued at Sh1000.
He succumbed to the injuries while being escorted by Mr Mbungua and Mr Kinyanjui to a place where they claimed he had sold the wire mesh.

Njui was regularly hired by Mr Njau as a farmhand to feed pigs before he was accused of theft.
The postmortem report indicated that he died of internal bleeding and had fractured arms.
Njui’s brother Jacob Mwaura was also allegedly assaulted by the suspects and their accomplice who has gone into hiding. They were forcing him to disclose where his brother had sold the wire.
He was detained by Mr Njau in his compound as his brother was escorted out before he collapsed and died while the two were dragging him.
The wire was later recovered under a vehicle inside the compound after Njui died.
The DCI is planning to place Mr Mwaura under witness protection before the three suspects are released on bond and bail upon being charged.
Detective Constable Dennis Were of Dagoretti DCI offices obtained orders at the Kibera law courts to detain the three suspects for 14 days to conclude the investigations into the matter.
He said he was investigating a case of murder contrary to section 203 as read with section 204 of the Penal Code where the three are the suspects.

The detective was seeking 21 days’ custodial orders but Senior Principal Magistrate Samson Temu granted 14 days.
Mr Were said some of the investigations to be conducted include the analysis of blood recovered at the scene of crime which is Mr. Njau’s home, and analyzing the CCTV footage recovered in the area which has been taken to the Cybercrime unit at the DCI headquarters for the same.
He said the suspects will also be escorted to the Mathare Mental Hospital for a psychiatrist assessment before they are charged.
The suspects had opposed Mr Were’s application through an advocate telling the court that they were not a flight risk and had a home near the police station.
They said the remaining investigations can be done while they are out on bail since they are willing to avail themselves to the DCI whenever needed. But the same was rejected.
The matter will be mentioned on January 25 when they are expected to be charged.
