Social halls to be turned into youth information centres
The dilapidated and deserted social halls in various estates will disappear soon.
Instead, they will be converted into resource centres where youths can get information about government loans, tenders and opportunities for investments.
The city’s 23 Social Halls will also have grounds around them rehabilitated for sports.
Work on two of the pioneer social halls will start next month, according to documents at Governor Evans Kidero’s office.
On Friday, his deputy Jonathan Mueke said Dandora and Joseph Kang’ethe Social Halls will be first to benefit from the new plan.
“All paper work is done and contractors will be on site next week. It will take a few months to have the work done,” Mr Mueke told NairobiNews.
The playgrounds will be converted into venues for nationwide league matches.
According to the blueprint, the buildings will cease to be areas for recreation only, as they will also be used to provide useful information for young people. City Hall will dispatch staff to man the centres once completed.
“The objective is to help the youth get information. We have realised very few are aware of the 30 per cent reserved for them in government tenders. Many others don’t even know what a tender is or how to apply for one.
