Varsity security guards deny raping first-year student

Two security guards attached to Moi University have been charged with raping a student at the institution.

The two, Ezekiel Barmasai and Timothy Kemboi are accused of committing the offense on Saturday at dawn within Moi University.

They pleaded not guilty to the charges before Eldoret Chief Magistrate Charles Obulutsa.

Each suspect separately faced two alternative charges touching the girl’s private parts without her consent.

The prosecution asked that the accused be remanded for security purposes after Moi University students threatened to lynch them.

INTERDICTION

Lawyer Charles Nyamweya for the accused however challenged the request saying his clients are able to take caution and stay away from the University now that they are on interdiction courtesy of being charged in court.

The magistrate granted the request and directed that the suspects be released on a Sh500, 000 bond each.

The matter will be mentioned on October 19 with the hearing date on November 2, 2017.

Student leader Mr Towett Ng’etich claimed the guards had sought sexual favor from the student after arriving at the institution past midnight contrary to regulations.

“The guards threatened to report the victim to university administration for coming to campus at late hours, he used the student dilemma to rape her,” said Mr Towett.
