Sakaja turns down Sonko’s endorsement for Governor seat

Nominated MP and TNA chairman Johnson Sakaja has turned down an endorsement by Senator Mike Sonko to run for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat in 2017.

Mr Sakaja told the Nairobi Senator that he is not interested in the seat and would prefer to seek a political seat upcountry.

“Go for it Chair we will support you,” Senator Sonko had tweeted.

“@MikeSonko ahh zii bro. Wacha niende ocha. All the best,” Mr Sakaja responded.

The curious endorsement by Senator Sonko on Twitter raised doubts on his own ambitions to unseat incumbent Governor Evans Kidero in the 2017 general elections.

The Senator has drastically scaled back his political engagements in Nairobi. He recently disbanded his infamous ‘Sonko Rescue Team’ and donated its vehicles to the Nairobi County Government.

Sonko explained that he had disbanded the team to repay all the “support and respect” he had received from Governor Evans Kidero since his father’s death. He did not substantiate.

The Sonko Rescue Team was a fleet of vehicles and workforce that offered free services to city residents including transport, medication and water.
