The funny ‘cows’ that ate Okoa Kenya referendum signatures

Some supporters of the failed Okoa Kenya referendum drew funny animal images instead of appending their legitimate signatures, it has emerged.

A screenshot of a page from the files shows a poorly drawn picture of what looks like a cow, while others are just scribbles.

The IEBC on Tuesday announced that the Okoa Kenya referendum bid had failed for failing to garner the required one million signatures from registered voters. Cord, the sponsors of the Bill, has since disputed the findings.

In its defence, IEBC says the format in which Okoa Kenya submitted the records had inconsistencies.

Some of the inconsistencies include: Some of the booklets were hand-written while others were typed. Out of 217 booklets, 172 books were handwritten, 43 printed while two books were both printed and handwritten.

“Some 43 booklets appeared to have been based on the IEBC register of voters; formats of and number of records in the booklets were different while serialization of the booklets was not consistent,” said the commission.

In addition, many booklets had entries that were illegible due to poor handwriting, something that slowed down the data capture process while a number of booklets had entries that were not signed.

“Some records were cancelled but not countersigned hence creating doubt over their validity. There were records without ID numbers while in other cases one ID number appeared in several records,” said IEBC.

“Some booklets had torn pages; In other cases, the records entered bore either one name of a supporter while others lacked names.”

Also, in others, multiple entries had the same name but different ID numbers while some records appeared to have been signed by one person.

“In some booklets, one signature covered multiple records,” said IEBC. “In some cases such as in booklet 116, records bore different marks instead of signatures. Ten booklets had some blank pages.”
