Arsenal legend Campbell to train local coaches in Nairobi
Sixty upcoming coaches from around the country on Monday converged on Kenya School of Monetary Studies in Nairobi for a six-day coaching clinic conducted by officials from English Premier League giants Arsenal.
A team from Arsenal’s coaching team was present on the first day of the training camp, and they will be joined by two other coaches as well as former Arsenal player Sol Campbell who will take the youthful tacticians through the short course.
The clinic has been organised by SportPesa and Extreme Sports Limited.
WORLD CUP DREAM
Speaking at the opening session, SportPesa Chief Executive Officer Ronald Karauri said that this was one of the initiatives his team has put in place to help fulfil Kenya’s dream of making it to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
“The main thing we are focusing on is the exchange of skills. These coaches will be passing their skills directly to our local coaches, with the hope that they can then apply the same expertise in their various teams,” Karauri said.
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
“When we (SportPesa) signed a partnership with Arsenal, we had the 2022 World Cup in mind. It is a long road to Qatar, and there is no way we can achieve that without proper training. The training is tailor-made for youth development and we therefore hope that from this clinic, our upcoming players will also benefit it,” he added.
The 60 coaches were selected from all the junior squads of KPL’s 16 teams, the ongoing Super Eight tournament and each of the eight Football Kenya Federation administrative regions.
“There is a reason so many Kenyans support football. We want to share a little of what we do back in London, hoping that some of the skills that we apply can also be used here,” Drew Tyler, a member of the coaching team, said during Monday’s opening ceremony.
