Police are narrowing down to specific suspects in relation to fire incident at Moi Girls Secondary School in Nairobi that claimed the lives of nine students on Saturday morning.

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said much of the investigations had been completed.

“I can tell you unequivocally that I have been briefed by the police that it was not an accident. All investigations have ruled out the fact that it was an accident; it was a case of arson and number of interrogations have happened,” said Dr Matiang’i while addressing journalists at his Jogoo House office.

He went on: “The police have assured that there are very useful leads of direction of specific suspects. And we will know in due course who those suspects are and other background information related to them.”

DEATH TOLL

He also announced that one student who was among the three in intensive care unit (ICU) had died on Sunday, raising the death toll to nine.

“We will do whatever possible as a Ministry to support the school so that it can resume programmes, we feel sudden that we have lost our children through such a criminal incident,” said the CS.

The death of the ninth student leaves two students in the ICU.

Dr Matiang’i added that all students in the school had been accounted for dismissing claims that some students are missing.

“While at the school, I directed that all students must only leave school in the company of their parents,” said the CS.

During the Saturday incident, 51 students were injured and were taken to Nairobi Women’s hospital with various degree of injuries.

A total of 40 were treated and immediately discharged while 11 students were admitted with three of them with serious injuries.
