Bobi Wine’s documentary bags an Oscar nomination: Full list 2024

The highly anticipated list of nominations for the 96th Academy Awards was released on January 24, and among the remarkable selections is Bobi Wine’s documentary, “THE PEOPLE’S PRESIDENT.” Produced by Moses Bwayo, Christopher Sharp, and John Battsek, the film has secured a spot in the prestigious Documentary Feature Film category.

Bobi Wine’s documentary is set to go head-to-head with formidable contenders such as “THE ETERNAL MEMORY FOUR DAUGHTERS,” “TO KILL A TIGER,” and “20 DAYS IN MARIUPOL.”

The film follows the journey of Ugandan opposition leader, activist, and musical sensation Bobi Wine, who used his artistry to challenge the longstanding regime led by President Yoweri Museveni.

Starting from the gritty slums of Kampala, Bobi Wine’s musical prowess catapulted him to become one of Uganda’s most beloved stars. The documentary portrays his transformation from an artist using music as a form of activism to an Independent Member of Parliament, standing up for the rights of the voiceless in the ghetto.

As the narrative unfolds, viewers witness the unsettling misuse of legal and parliamentary systems, the supposed pillars of democracy. The film delves into the control of the country’s institutions by the State, ensuring President Museveni’s autocratic rule since 1986. Bobi and his wife, Barbie, brave the uncertainties as they risk everything to challenge the oppressive regime, facing relentless attempts to silence not only them but anyone supporting their cause.

“This is not just a story for Uganda; it is a narrative for all those who struggle under dictatorial regimes. Those who oppose them quickly discover that Western democracies have interests that do not extend to holding autocrats to account. This story has never been so relevant,” states the documentary’s synopsis.

The 96th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on March 10, promising a night of celebration and recognition for outstanding achievements in the world of cinema.

That said, here is the full list of the 2024 Oscar nominees list.
