Bongo stars called out over obsession with Zuwena

Several Tanzanian singers were called out over their obsession with singing about or mentioning the name Zuwena in their songs.

Also included were Ugandan singers the late Mowzey Radio and Weasel Manizo who sang as song called Zuwena.

A Tanzanian comedian and TikToker using the moniker Zungu TV called out the artists, saying that there was no musician in his country who can release a song without mentioning Zuwena.

“There is Diamond Platinumz telling his brother about how Zuwena has changed (in his latest hit song, Zuwena, that he released a month ago), and then there is Mbosso asking where he will find Zuwena (in the hit song Zilizopendwa that featured Diamond, Harmonize, Rich Mavoko and Rayvanny as well). There is also Rayvanny who is also praising a Zuwena for being extremely beautiful (in a remix song released two years ago where he featured Mbosso and the song’s original writer, Weasel),” said Zungu TV.

He also included two more video clips of an oldies song in which the man sang about Zuwena and wondered where he could go and meet her and another one of a different artiste singing to a woman named Zuwena, asking her to accept him and his love.

“Tanzania tutafika kweli? Haya, sidhani kama tutafika,” concluded Zungu TV.

His dissection of the bongo songs elicited mixed reactions as sampled by Nairobi News below:

“Diamond alimaanisha (meant) Zchu Wema Sepetu Natasha Donna,” claimed Aloe of Diamond’s famous ex-girlfriends.

“Zuwena is so lucky,” added Mamaccita.

“Alafu kuna wewe unapata like Na comment kwasababu ya zuena (And then there is you here who is getting likes and comments because of Zuena),” Katoto Ka Coast told Zungu TV.

All these artistes mentioned by Zungu TV either continue to be or were part of Diamond Platinumz’ Wasafi Record music label and it may have been here that the love and obsession for the name Zuwena was birthed and nurtured.

In Tanzania, Zuwena is a girl’s name which means good. In Tanzania, it is among the top five names given to baby girls upon birth. In the songs, the name Zuwena may have been used as a blanket descriptive name for good women without having to mention their particular names. For example, as Mbosso sings, “Zuwena, nitampata wapi? (where can I find Zuwena?)” he might have been asking where he could find a good woman.
