Why City Hall has blocked off part of Harambee Avenue
City motorists will not be able to access parts of Harambee Avenue after the county government temporarily closed it to pave way for the construction of a tunnel.
The tunnel will connect the National Assembly chambers with the MPs’ offices in Continental House located across the avenue, said Leboo Ole Morintant, Nairobi’s acting county secretary.
The county government has urged motorists to use alternative routes following the closure which was effected on November 6.
The section will remain closed till May 30, 2018.
During the temporary closure, there will be no entry vehicles from Uhuru Highway towards Parliament Road.
Motorists will, however, be able to access Uhuru Highway from Parliament Road.
City Hall will also ensure that the passage of pedestrians will be maintained with a walkway of at least three metres wide in good paved standard for the period of closure.
Mr Morintant added that traffic police officers will be deployed on site to direct motorists during rush hours travel to avert traffic jams.
He added that after completion of tunnel construction Harambee Avenue shall revert to its former state.
