Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, on Tuesday, January 23, 2023, convened a meeting with Nyandarua Members of County Assembly (MCAs) at his official residence in Karen, Nairobi, where he commended them for passing the County Alcoholic Drinks Act.

According to the second in command, the Alcohol Law will bolster his campaign against illicit brew.
Nyandarua is the first county to enact legislation regulating the production, sale, and consumption of alcohol.

“In bringing to life the Nyandarua County Alcoholic Drinks Act 2023, you have spoken loudly and clearly. You have chosen life and prosperity,” Mr Gachagua conveyed to the county legislators.

The DP praised the county’s leadership, emphasising that it is safeguarding a generation at risk of being wiped out by illicit brews.

However, Gachagua affirmed Nyandarua of his commitment to implementing the Act.
In 2014, Nyandarua passed the County Alcoholic Drinks Control Act to curb the infiltration of liquor causing considerable suffering to the locals.

According to Mr Gachagua, the Nyandarua County Alcoholic Drinks Act is an exciting outcome of various engagements he held with stakeholders at the national and county levels.

The law complements the efforts of national government agencies such as the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), tasked with combating illicit and fake brews, as well as drug abuse.

“I wish to take this opportunity to clarify that the fight against toxic and illicit alcohol aims to promote quality in genuine business. We invite all to support this initiative to restore dignity in our youth, who are the main target for dishonest and heartless people,” DP Gachagua stated.

Mr Gachagua initiated the fight against illicit alcohol and drug abuse early last year, 2023, beginning in his homeyard and later extending the operation to other parts of the Mt Kenya Region, with a promise to make it a national crackdown.

The head of state assigned the Deputy President the duty, President William Ruto, who he says acknowledges the effort made by Nyandarua MCAs in prioritizing the people’s welfare over personal political interests.

Although he admitted it had not been an easy task, he issued a warning to provincial administrators and security bosses who threatened to impede his cause.
