Facebook denies hackers caused global outage that lasted hours

Facebook, Instagram and Messenger went down for hours across the world on Wednesday night.

Majority of users could open the platforms but could not send or receive content.

Of the three, Instagram was worst hit. Posts weren’t loading, Instagram Stories were down and direct messages and the button to post new content was also not working.

Facebook responded on Twitter after people had noticed the outage.

“We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps. We’re working to resolve the issue as soon as possible,” they tweeted.

The California giant later indicated the outage was not related to an attack.

“We’re focused on working to resolve the issue as soon as possible, but can confirm that the issue is not related to a DDoS attack,” Facebook said, referring to what is known as a distributed denial of service cyber strike.

The majority of users affected by the outage were located in United States, United Kingdom, India, and the Philippines.

The company last suffered a massive outage in November 2018.
