Guardian newspaper apologizes to Kenyan for ‘faulty’ advert

By Wangu Kanuri February 11th, 2022 1 min read

The Guardian newspaper has been forced to publicly apologize for an advert it placed seeking to employ a Kenyan journalist, even though one of the conditions indicated the successful applicant should ‘be able to live and work in the UK.’

The advert was considered discriminatory as it is extremely difficult for a Kenyan to be allowed to live and work in the UK.

“Hi, sorry about this. This is an error on our recruitment site – we absolutely *do* want African journalists to apply! (and UK work authorization isn’t required). We will correct the application form asap and extend the deadline into next week for anyone who has had a problem,” Guardian newspaper posted.

The apology was tendered after the English paper was called out for the ‘tough’ conditions by Kenyan journalist Ferdinand Omondi, who works at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

“The Guardian advertises for a Kenya Correspondent Job. The Guardian says it encourages Black and Ethnic minorities to apply. The Guardian locks out Kenyan and African journalists unless you have the right to work in the UK,” Ferdinand Omondi posted.
