KEBS, KRA officials arrested over contaminated rice scandal
Several seniors officers of Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) officials and Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) have been arrested in Nairobi and Mombasa for releasing contaminated rice into the country.
The officials were questioned at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters in Nairobi on Saturday.
According to the police, the officials, who also included a Port Health officer, released into the market a consignment of substandard Thai rice.
COURT CHARGES
The KPA officials who were arrested included Mr Kiprono Bullut, Mr David Mbogori, Ms Dorothy Wanja, Mr Michael Juma and Mr Ahmed Dhahir.
Others were Mr Charles Ogwae, Mr Erick Chesire, Mr Martin Nyakiamo, Mr Erick Onyango, Mr Peter Ndungu from KEB’s and Mr Pole Mwangemi.
Also arrested in the swoop in Mombasa were Mr Daniel Kimonge, Mr Roy Mwanthi, Mr Karim Dharamshi, Mr Felix Makau, Mr Bassam Hakem, and Ms Irene Githendu.
The suspects will be charged in court on Monday with abuse of office and neglect of official duty.
