Kenya prepares to celebrate Utamaduni Day


The State Department for Culture, The Arts, and Heritage is delighted to announce the upcoming celebration of Utamaduni Day on October 10th, 2023.

Formerly known as Moi Day, this significant day was redefined in 2020, following the Statute Miscellaneous Amendments Act No. 29 of 2020, to honor and celebrate Kenya’s rich cultural diversity.

The national celebrations will take place at the esteemed Bomas of Kenya, graced by the honorable presence of His Excellency Dr. William Ruto, President of Kenya, and other distinguished dignitaries.

Utamaduni Day stands as a powerful testament to the pivotal role cultural diversity plays in promoting national unity, inclusive development, equity, and justice.

This year, the theme for the celebration is “Celebrating Our Unity Through Diversity.”

In partnership with counties across Kenya, The State Department for Culture, The Arts, and Heritage is spearheading efforts to make Utamaduni Day 2023 a resounding success.

The focus of this year’s celebration is on fostering public engagement, organizing vibrant street fairs, and hosting food festivals that showcase our cultural traditions.

Ms. Ummi Bashir, the Principal Secretary for The State Department for Culture, The Arts, and Heritage, emphasized the significance of Utamaduni Day, stating, “Utamaduni Day underscores Kenya’s commitment to celebrating diversity and unity, paving the way for a more inclusive future.”

Key Highlights of Utamaduni Day 2023:

  1. Public Engagement: Kenyan citizens are encouraged to actively participate in discussions, workshops, and cultural showcases that highlight our diverse heritage.
  2. Street Fairs: Vibrant street fairs will be organized across the nation, providing a platform for local artisans and craftsmen to display their talents and create a lively atmosphere.
  3. Food Festivals: Attendees will have the opportunity to savor the flavors of Kenya through traditional dishes from various communities, offering a unique culinary experience that celebrates our distinct culture.
  4. Cultural Performances: Enthralling performances reflecting the rich tapestry of Kenyan culture, including music, dance, and theater, will captivate audiences.
