Kenyatta University speaks after 11 students die in road accident


The Kenyatta University community is in mourning following a devastating accident involving a university bus carrying students on an academic trip to Mombasa. The accident occurred on Monday 18 March in Maungu, Taita Taveta County, when the university bus collided with a tractor-trailer.

Heartbreakingly, initial reports indicate that students were killed. In response to the tragedy, Kenyatta University said in a statement that it had quickly mobilised a team from both the main and Mombasa campuses to the scene to assess the situation, provide assistance to the survivors and gather accurate information.

“The team, comprising two doctors, medical staff, university security officers and student and staff welfare officers, is working diligently to provide the necessary assistance to the injured. Some students are currently being assessed for possible evacuation to Nairobi, depending on the severity of their injuries,” the statement read.

Adding, “At the moment we are not able to share specific numbers and/or names but can confirm that there are several fatalities involved.”

The University gave assurances that a comprehensive update will be issued later today as more information becomes available.

“On behalf of the University Council and the University Management Board, I would like to express our heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones in this tragic accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all,” said Prof Paul K Wainaina, Vice Chancellor of Kenyatta University.

In response to the tragic event, the university has set up a help desk at the Business Students Services Centre (BSSC) Room 151.
