Learn and have fun at Nairobi Aero Club

By ALLAN OLINGO February 8th, 2014 1 min read

Looking for a relaxing Sunday afternoon? Well, there is the Nairobi Aero Club.

If you are interested in planes, then this is the place to be.

Located at Wilson Airport, the club will give you a chance to enjoy a sumptuous meal as you watch planes taking off and landing.

It has a rich history, as there are pictures on the wall to sing its life.

Did you know that Wilson Airport was originally called the Nairobi Aerodrome and had just two runways in 1933?

Did you know that then, it was the Ngong Landing Field in Dagoretti that served planes from the British Royal Air Force?

Nairobi Aerodrome was changed to Wilson Airport in 1962 to honour of Florence Kerr Wilson who founded one of the first airlines in Kenya, Wilson Airways.

Imperial Airways airmail service was the  main use for the airport, and a passenger services did not start until after the Second World War.

These are some of the details that you will find when you visit the club.

They have a lot of 20th Century memorabilia; including  a Spitfire engine, and lots of photos and records of famous local aviators, including Beryl Markham and historical characters from  Out Of Africa, the movie that put Kenya on the Hollywood map.

The club is a perfect place for a family outing because children will marvel at the planes while there is also plenty of food and drink.

There is also a children’s play area, where they can  see planes taking off and landing.

Wilson Airport currently serves domestic flights and it is interesting to watch the chartered flights on turboprops, piston aeroplanes and helicopters.

The club offers membership subscriptions for various activities but you can just walk in for lunch as you enjoy their services.
