Relief as NHIF management included in SHIF transition talks

The stalemate over the transition from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) appears to have been resolved after the NHIF management was brought to the table.

A correspondence seen by Nairobi News indicates the Transition Committee chairperson Kap Kirwok Jason has invited the NHIF management for round table talks. The meeting will be held next week.

The ongoing talks are meant to find a truce on mediation matters concerning the management of NHIF staff during the transition period.

The staff, through Bonaventure and Associates Advocates, had shared concerns about being left out of the talks and possibly losing their jobs.

“The Transition Committee is pleased to invite representatives of the management staff (NHIF) to a meeting to be held tomorrow April 26, 2024, at 11 am at the NHIF building,” part of the letter reads.

In an earlier proposal, NHIF staff were offered a one-year period to re-apply their jobs.

NHIF, which has been in place for decades is set to undergo a split into three outfits as part of the ongoing reforms which include having the institution renamed as SHIF.

The legal representation argued that the management staff has vast knowledge and expertise that will prove vital to the talks.

“They are a group with a wealth of experience in management and therefore are ready to offer the same during the transition. However, a number also have grievances that they believe the committee needs to look into,” the NHIF staff legal team explained.

Mr Otieno oversaw the mediation talks on behalf of NHIF management staff, which is considered a win for them by the fact of being brought to the table going forward.
