Local liquor traders oppose fee hikes

The Small and Medium Liquor Traders Association (MELTA), a representative body for a significant portion of local liquor establishments and small businesses, has voiced strong objection to the recent proposal for a substantial increase in liquor license fees within the community.

The association, which plays a crucial role in advocating for the interests of its members, highlights several concerns about the potential repercussions of the proposed fee hikes.

While acknowledging the importance of generating revenue for public services and regulatory efforts, MELTA expresses profound concern over the disproportionate impact these fee increases may have on small businesses.

Many of its members are locally-owned and family-operated establishments, and the proposed hikes could jeopardize their viability, potentially leading to job losses within the community.

Key concerns raised by MELTA include the disproportionate impact on small businesses, economic fragility in an era of uncertainty, potential job cuts and reduced working hours, hindrance to local economic growth, and the deterrence of responsible operators.

The association emphasizes that the proposed fee hikes may lead to increased prices for consumers, affecting local patrons’ access to affordable leisure activities.

One of the central points raised by MELTA is the lack of consultation in the decision-making process.

The association believes that any increase in license fees should result from a comprehensive and collaborative consultation process that considers the perspectives of all stakeholders.

While acknowledging the importance of responsible regulation of liquor establishments, MELTA urges the relevant authorities to reconsider the proposed increases and welcomes the opportunity for constructive dialogue.

The association emphasizes the need for a more balanced and equitable solution that supports both local businesses and the community.

MELTA reaffirms its commitment to upholding the highest standards of social responsibility and business ethics within the liquor industry.

The association hopes that its concerns will be taken into account and looks forward to a productive discussion with relevant County officials on the matter.

In the absence of a satisfactory resolution, MELTA expresses its readiness to challenge the decision in court.
