Measure their skirts! Gachagua fights sex workers targeting farmers’ tea bonus

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said on March 24, 2024, that as head of the Mount Kenya region, he would order a crackdown on commercial sex workers who flock to the area to prey on farmers who have been paid their tea bonus.

“This time they will meet me personally… I will not allow them to come near our farmers. One of the reasons I am fighting reckless alcoholism is to seal off the opportunities these women use to get to our farmers,” he said.

The pay structure for tea farmers by the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) is a monthly rate for tea leaves delivered, followed by a mini bonus in January and a full bonus in September.

“I will order roadblocks to be put up. This time, those women with their short skirts will not be allowed into the Mt Kenya region, they must stay away,” he said while addressing the congregation at Muthithi Catholic Church in Murang’a County on Palm Sunday.

Mr Gachagua said, “I cannot work so hard to restructure the agriculture sector and once the dividends improve, I let these women come here and reap where they never sowed because our rightful women here suffer”.

Mr Gachagua reiterated that “if need be, we will ensure that there are officers with tape measures to determine the appropriate length of skirts to be worn by our farmers during the boom times”.

Speaking at Muthithi Catholic Church in Murang’a County, Mr Gachagua said “I want to see a situation where our male farmers give their wives Sh3,000 as pocket money”.

He urged the men to have a strong character “where you can resist the lure of these commercial sex workers and instead concentrate on beautifying your wives”.

He advised them that “a woman is good if she is bathed and has money in her purse…she will look beautiful”.

He urged the men to have good judgement and realise there is more happiness in treating and pampering their wives instead of “those wicked ones whose interest is your farm produce”.
