Mr Ibu: Here are 10 facts about the fallen popular actor


The entertainment industry in Africa is in mourning as renowned actor John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, breathed his last at the weekend.

The veteran Nollywood actor and comedian who fails from Enugu State in his native Nigeria, has been unwell for some time.

The  news of his demise was released to the public by his longtime manager.

Emeka Rollas, president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, confirmed the actor succumbed to cardiac arrest.

“I announce with a deep sense of grief that Ibu didn’t make it. Mr Ibu suffered a cardiac arrest according to his manager of 24 years,” President Rollas shared on his Instagram page.

Mr Ibu’s journey in the world of entertainment was marked by numerous milestones and unforgettable contributions to Nigerian cinema.

Rising to prominence with his signature comedic style, he captivated audiences with his infectious laughter and unparalleled talent.

From his breakout role in the 2004 hit movie “Mr Ibu” to his appearances in over 200 Nollywood films, including “Mr Ibu and His Son,” “Coffin Producers,” and “Husband Suppliers,” his legacy is etched in the annals of Nigerian cinema history.

Beyond his illustrious acting career, Mr Ibu was also known for his foray into music, releasing singles such as “This Girl” and “Do You Know” in 2020.

In October 2023, news of his illness prompted an outpouring of support from the public, with his family expressing gratitude for the overwhelming response and financial assistance received during his time of need.

Tragically, despite undergoing multiple surgeries and facing the amputation of one of his legs due to complications, Mr Ibu’s health continued to decline.

His passing at the age of 62 leaves behind a void in the Nigerian entertainment landscape, as colleagues and admirers mourn the loss of a true legend.

  4. Mr Ibu rose to fame with the release of the movie “Mr Ibu” in 2004, co-starring with fellow actor Osita Iheme.
