Nairobi MCAs approve motion to digitise Jua Kali platform

Nairobi County Assembly has passed a motion to promote the Small, Micro and Macro Enterprises in the County.

The motion that was tabled by Clay City MCA Mr Mwaura Samora.

It seeks to ensure the Jua Kali sector is promoted through provision of a virtual platform that would enable the County residents to access artisan services vetted and licensed by the county government.

“With a County Virtual Services Bureau, residents in the County will be able to remotely access, inquire and seek artisan services such as Plumbing, electrical, carpentry, welding, painting among others from the registered and vetted service providers a formal County portal system,” Mr Mwaura said.

The MCA is now asking the Executive side of Governor Johnson Sakaja to develop a Nairobi City County Virtual Artisan Bureau that will vet, license and link artisans to those who require their services for promotion of economy in the County.

While defending his motion, Mr Mwaura said it will not only link the artisans with their clients, but will ensure that the sector is organised.

“It will ensure that the Jua Kali sector is well organized in such a way that we will no longer depend on the word of mouth. I don’t need to know someone in Karen to get a job there. This platforms elevates everyone to the same page,” Mr Mwaura said.

In addition, the platform will be a source of revenue to the county government since the county will introduce charges before uploading someone’s business to the platform.

It will also be a way of promoting service provisions, where rating will be used to promote the services that are being offered by the artisans, hence improving their chances of getting more jobs.

“If you do a shoddy job and get negative ratings, it decreases your chances of getting more jobs.”

The motion is also expected to streamline the Jua Kali sector which has been facing stiff competition from digitalized markets, where the items are available on the platforms and ready for delivery.

This is also in line with the Kenya Kwanza Administration’s plan of digitalizing service provision and encouraging the youth to embrace the digital space to attract more customers.
