Nairobi ranked 9th city in the world with worst traffic

Nairobi has been ranked the ninth city in the world with the worst traffic and high carbon dioxide emission index.

The ranking of the cities was arrived at by using a ‘Time Index’ that factors in the average time spent by a commuter on a one-way trip.

In Nairobi, you have to sit for an average of 65.20 minutes in order to reach your destination.

The study on cities with the world’s worst traffic jams was released by Numbeo, a website that collates global information related to costs of living, crime rates and pollution.

Apart from that, the other factors include ‘Inefficiency Index’, which comprises of long commute hours, poor traffic laws, driving, etc.

According to a government survey released in May 2016, the time wasted in traffic jams represents a cost of $578,000 (Sh58.4 million) a day in lost productivity. That’s more than $210 million (Sh2.1 billion) a year.
