NASA now want IEBC officials prosecuted

By HILARY KIMUYU September 1st, 2017 1 min read

The National Super Alliance (Nasa) leader Raila Odinga on Friday said that Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officials prosecuted for running a shambolic elections.

Mr Odinga, who ran for State House for the fourth time on August 8, said they do not have faith in the commission chaired by Wafula Chebukati.

Odinga was jubilant as he welcomed what he called a “precedent-setting ruling” by the court.

“This indeed is a very historic day for the people of Kenya and by extension the people of the continent of Africa,” he said.

“We have no faith in the electoral commission as currently constituted. They have committed criminal acts. Most of them actually belong in jail and therefore we are going to ask prosecution for all the electoral commission officials who have committed this monstrous crime against the people of Kenya.”

TRIUMPH

He added: “This is a triumph for the people of Kenya.”

His running mate Kalonzo Musyoka also added his voice and called for IEBC to be dismissed.

“We do not have faith that they are capable of conducting a free & fair election,” added Mr Musyoka.

Thirdway Alliance leader Ekuru Auko who also a presidential candidate added that those people who committed irregularities must be punished and UN should run elections.

NASA lawyer Otiende Amollo blamed IEBC for the fiasco.

The court agreed with opposition arguments that the electoral commission had committed irregularities that invalidated the poll.

But Mr Chebukati said he would not resign and instead asked Director of Public Prosecutions to investigate and prosecute its staff who are culpable.

“I am confident that we can deliver the election in 60 days. The Court said IEBC to run the election. This is the only institution that can do that,” said Chebukati.
