Nation and KBC journalist stabbed during raid on Kilimani shisha dens


Four journalists are amongst eight people who were on the night of Friday, January 5, 2024, left nursing injuries after they were attacked by revelers nabbed smoking shisha at Kettle House Bar and Grill located in Kileleshwa along Muthangari Drive in Nairobi County.

The injured were amongst a group of media personalities and officials from the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) who were conducting an operation on joints where revelers smoke shisha, whose use is prohibited in Kenya.

Police identified the eight as Mr Boniface Bogita of Nation Media Group was stabbed in the ribs and also lost his phone, Ms Jane Kibira who works at Kenya Broadcasting Channel (KBC) she was stabbed with a knife from the back and Mr Lawrence Tikolo who works at Citizen TV who complained of pain from his left ribs and a camera he was using was damaged.

Others are Mr Bonface Okendo who works at Standard Media Group who was assaulted and his flash disc damaged and Mr David Ousa who is a driver attached to NACADA.

Three police officers identified as Mr Joseph Ruto, Mr Joel Nyaga and Mr Bonface Mutisya were also assaulted during the scuffle.

Mr Anthony Omerikwa, who is the NACADA boss condemned the incident saying that the attack was not going to stop his office from performing its duties.

“The bouncers of the club started the scuffle when they realised that the media and NACADA officials were in the premises. This message should go to all bar owners that shisha is illegal and the raids will go on,” said Mr Omerikwa who had also reported about the saga that took place at Kettle House Bar and Grill.

Police in a statement said that they had managed to arrest 21 people who are in custody and assisting them with investigations.

Nairobi News has established that they will be arraigned in court on Monday, January 8, 2023.

For the last two months, NACADA has been conducting raids in various joints within the city and nabbing those found smoking shisha.
