NMG Appoints new CEO as Linus Gitahi retires


The Nation Media Group (NMG), the largest media house in East and Central Africa, has appointed Joseph Muganda as the new Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, replacing Linus Gitahi who has retired.

Mr Muganda, who is currently the MD of Kenya Breweries Ltd, will take over from July 1 this year.

The BSc Econ (Accounting and Financial Management) graduate from Buckingham University and holder of an MBA from Leicester University will be in charge of one of Kenya’s oldest media house with footprints in Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania.

The outgoing CEO expressed satisfaction with the role he had played at NMG and exuded full confidence in his successor.

“I am grateful for the opportunity I have had to make my contribution for eight and half years here. It has been my desire to see the transitions that have happened.

“Joe is one of the best managers I know in whose hands I am confident this business will move to another level both in products and geographical expansion,’’ Mr Gitahi told journalists at NMG boardroom.

EDITORIAL PORTFOLIOS

Mr Gitahi, 53, who holds Masters of Business Administration degree from the United States International University (USIU) and Bachelors of Commerce (Accounting option) degree from the University of Nairobi has been Group Chief Executive Officer at Nation Media Group Limited since November 2006.

He previously served as Managing Director of GlaxoSmithKline, West Africa and Chairman of AIB Capital Ltd.

The Chief Operating Officer Tom Mshindi who has been acting as the Editorial Director, has also been appointed the Editor-in-Chief.

Mr Mshindi will be charge of all NMG’s editorial portfolios across the print, broadcasting, and digital platforms.

“In his new position, Mr Mshindi joins the Nation Media Group as an Executive Director,” read a statement by the group company secretary, James Kinyua.

The board also appointed Leornard Mususa as a non-executive director. Prior to his appointment, Mr Mususa was a senior country partner for PriceWaterhouseCoopers in Tanzania.

Mr Mususa has also been appointed the chairman of the board of Mwananchi Communications Ltd, NMG’s subsidiary in Tanzania.
