Police arrest city couple over Sh100m swindle

Police on Monday arrested a Nairobi couple who allegedly swindled some freight businesses at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport out of more than Sh100 million.

The two were arrested at the Sameer Business Park by detectives, who had spent the better part of the morning at their premises at the Wall Street Business Park.

According to the police, several companies had complained that they had lost millions of shillings to the company, which exports fresh produce to Europe and Asia.

“It is a case of obtaining money by false pretences. We are currently taking their statements and we will arraign them once we are through with our investigations,” Mr Julius Mbati, the head of criminal investigations at the JKIA said.

Africair Management and Logistics Limited Director Guy Mertens said the couple had issued his company with 13 bouncing cheques and had failed to pay Sh50 million.

Despite several emails asking the firm to pay the money, the latter did not, and, instead, made several business deals with other companies.

He alleged that he had to close down an airline representation company since he could not sustain it due to liquidity problems.

“To date, the company has not paid me and the directors do not pick up my calls and do not even reply to emails,” Mr Mertens alleged.

Police are also investigating claims by some businessmen that the couple had also issued threats on their lives.
