Police kill man found raping UoN student near golf club

Police on Wednesday night shot and killed a man they found raping a University of Nairobi student, moments after she was kidnapped by people who asked for Sh4 million ransom.

The police were alerted of the kidnap by the victim’s boyfriend, who had been with her before she was taken away by machete wielding assailants.

Central OCPD Paul Wanjama said the student was kidnapped at around 6.30pm, as she walked home.

“She had been with her boyfriend and a few minutes after they bade each other goodbye, near the Railways Golf Club, three people grabbed the girl and called the boyfriend, asking for Sh4 million ransom.

“The boyfriend told the kidnappers he could not raise such money. After negotiations, they settled for Sh10,000, which the boyfriend said he would send in a few minutes but instead reported the incident to Parliament Police Station,” Mr Wanjama said.

Police were then mobilised to search for the kidnappers who were traced to a thicket inside the golf course.

“When police arrived, the girl had been raped and one of the kidnappers was found in the act. The suspect drew a machete and tried to attack the police officers, but was shot,” Mr Wanjama said.
