Robbery survivor still beats the odds after 10 surgeries

Being confined to a wheelchair and unable to move both limbs after a harrowing attack has not slowed down Morris Gakuru.

The 28-year-old father of one  from Kamiu Village, Embu County, has been through 10 surgeries since a robbery attack that left him near dead.

On the night of January 28, 2015, robbers broke into his home and hacked him using machetes leaving him unconscious.

Mr Gakuru was then taken to Embu level five hospital by neighbours where he was stabilised and transferred to Chogoria Referral Hospital.

SIX SURGERIES

He was admitted at Chogoria for two months and underwent six surgeries while in and out of the hospital.

After months of travelling to the Chogoria hospital for follow ups, he was referred to Kijabe Hospital after it was discovered that both limbs had developed an infection.

At Kijabe hopital, he underwent four other surgeries, the latest being last week when he resorted to fundraising through selling grafted tree seedlings at a discounted rate for his hospital bill.

“I was a farmer even before I was attacked so since January my employee has been taking care of the nursery while I attend clinics and theatre appointments,” Mr Gakuru told Nairobi News from his hospital bed at Kijabe.

The father of one has exhausted all means to raise funds. He has so far spent Sh1.4 million on treatment since January.

ALL AVENUES

“My friends have fundraised more than once and I have even registered a paybill number 587688 that has been helping me raise money. After trying all avenues I resorted to using my business to raise the remaining funds to clear my hospital bill,” said Mr Gakuru.

To make orders for grafted tree seedlings, visit his farm Namor Horticulture in Kamiu, near the National Cereals and Produce Board Embu Depot or contact Mr Gakuru on 0716573080.

Mr Gakuru has also sales the tree seedlings via Facebook which has caught the attention of many users among them State House Digital Director Dennis Itumbi.

Mr Itumbi on Sunday made an order of 70  seedlings.

“I made immediate contact and bought 20 apples, 30 passion, 10 avocado and 10 oranges. What touches me about his appeal is that one thing, I am helpless, I am confined, but I have a nursery of seeds, kindly just buy the seedlings, I will pay my bills and continue with my business,” wrote Mr Itumbi on his Facebook page.
