SNAPPY 7: DOM – Pathetic men will always lie to you in this industry

She is young and one to watch in the music industry; her name is symbolic of what she stands for, DOM (Definition of Music).

She started out in rap battles and many remember her as one of the finalist in the Nokia Don’t Break the Beat Competition. DOM is definitely determined to prove that the buzz is not just a fluke.

1. Briefly tell us about yourself – I’m a normal girl, went to high school then later joined USIU and currently employed. I’m an and I started way back by doing rap battles on the streets. Two years ago, I recorded my first single. I’m a Taita and my real name is Dom Mwangemi who stands as my stage name Definition of Music.

2. How did you start your music journey? – I finished my high school and told my father that I wanted to be a rapper and the following weekend he took me to the studio and he paid for a session. That is how I started recording my music. Prior to that I would just go out and battle on the streets with other rappers.

3. Talk about your first single, Let It Play – It was such a nice song, I loved it and some people still love it. The reason I wrote the song was because sometimes the DJs in clubs like to scratch the songs and people cannot enjoy it, so my point was to tell them to just let the song play.

4. How is your new song Ujana Ni Moshi different from your other projects? – I guess I’m growing because so far it is doing better than my other projects. Let It Play was all fun, then I did Tujuane Tena which was really deep. I believe Ujana Ni Moshi is a song you can listen and enjoy because it has a strong message and it is easy to listen to.

5. What is your perspective of the music industry? – As long as you are not in the music industry you can never understand what is going on at all. People cry a lot and I cried too because of the pressure you get around you. Before I thought I will go in the studio record, perform and take pictures, but it is a whole mess if you are new. I have grown and now I know what steps to take and avoid.

6. What is the most annoying thing you’ve to endure as a musician? – Guys are always annoying because everyone wants to lie to you that they can help propel you to the next level. What I have learnt is that, if you have to, just do you, and it will get you to the next level. It is pathetic that a grown man can pull out his phone and show his contacts and tell you he will help you, which they never do.

7. What input do you want to bring to Kenyan music and can we expect an album from you? – I want Kenyan music to be in the map. When you mention African music, people will always mention South Africa, Nigeria, and now Tanzania, but Kenya will never be mentioned except for Sauti Sol who are trying to put Kenya on the map. I’m not dropping an album anytime soon, because I do not have the capability to push my album to where I want it to get. For now I will work on my music and try to gain a bigger fan base.
