Social media ablaze after Uhuru raises more than Sh500m in two hours

Kenyans have been left wondering how almost Sh1 billion was raised to bolster President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election campaign kitty in less than two hours.

The invite-only dinner on Friday night, which was attended by President Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto, saw monied businessmen and top government officials making huge contributions.

The high-profile event, in which the media was completely barred from covering, had those in attendance seated according to their contributions.

The highest level, Platinum, who contributed Sh10 million and above, sat closest to the President. The next level was the Gold category which comprised those offering at least Sh5 million to help Mr Kenyatta secure a second term in office.

Then came the Silver group who parted with Sh2.5 million, followed by the Bronze category who offered Sh1 million and lastly the Garnet category who contributed Sh500,000. There were also those who sent their contributions but did not attend the invite-only event.

Those at the venue had been given invitation cards earlier and only came with their bank deposit slips as no cash contributions were made.

Here are some of the reaction on social media from concerned Kenyans.
