Tanzanian rapper Ney wa Mitego targets Kenyan struggles in viral hit

Tanzanian rapper Emmanuel Elibariki, popularly known as Ney wa Mitego, has released a provocative song addressing the challenges faced by Kenyans in their country.

The artist, who is no stranger to controversy, takes on various societal issues in his latest track.

In the song, Ney recounts his recent visit to a country he cryptically refers to as ‘abroad,’ describing it as an expensive place where food is costly, yet alcohol is cheap.

He highlights the prevalent issue of daytime blackouts, disrupting the working population.

The artist delves into the Kenyan music scene, lamenting that many musicians no longer take their craft seriously until prompted by fan criticism.

Ney also touches on the economic struggles, stating that, in the country he refers to, sex is seemingly more affordable than food.

He also points out the unemployment crisis among educated individuals, stating that learned people are jobless and loitering with nothing to do.

Ney expresses concern about the moral standards of young women, asserting that many date older men for financial gain, while implying that a significant number engage in transactional relationships.

In the final verse, Ney seems to defend comedian Eric Omondi, claiming he is the only artist actively advocating for the well-being of Kenyans.

He suggests that artists in this unnamed country are generally aligned with the government, except for one, who faces constant police scrutiny for speaking up on behalf of the citizens.

Ney’s song was released on January 25 and has since garnered over 280k views on YouTube.

This isn’t Ney wa Mitego’s first foray into controversy.

In July 2023, his song ‘Amkeni’ led to a ban by Tanzania’s National Art Council, BASATA, due to its criticism of President Samia Suluhu’s administration.

The artist accused the government of corruption and President Suluhu of failing to fulfill promises.

The new song has elicited mixed reactions, with some applauding Ney for addressing harsh truths about Kenya, while others question the accuracy of his portrayal.

Social media is abuzz with comments, with many expressing solidarity with Ney’s sentiments.

On YouTube, @richardntelika7571 praised Ney for speaking the truth, stating, “Pure Truth, Kenya is the whole story.”

@Sarakasiworld drew comparisons to Kenyan artist Khaligraph Jones, stating, “Khaligraph Jones look at what you did. You don’t throw stones and you live in a glass house. We need an artist in Kenya like fuckin Nay. Pure genius. Pure truth. Kenya in the abyss.”

While opinions vary, Ney wa Mitego’s song has sparked a broader conversation about the challenges facing Kenya and has resonated with many who feel the artist has spoken the unfiltered truth about the struggles within the nation.
