Tragic! Malkia Striker captain Mercy Moim loses partner, mother in law
Kenyan star volleyballer Mercy Moim is in mourning following the sudden deaths of her partner and mother in law inside one week.
As a result, Moim, who captains the national women volleyball team, otherwise known as Malkia Strikers, was forced to return to Nairobi from Accra where she was part of Team Kenya competing in the African Games.
The respected attacker, who plies her trade for KCB in the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) Premier League, had featured for Kenya in the identical 3-0 wins over Seychelles and Nigeria.
“She will have to go back home and mourn because this is a deadly double loss,”KVF chairman Charles Nyaberi told Nairobi News.
Moim arrived in Nairobi on March 19 and was received at the airport by Paul Bitok, a volleyball coach and KVF official.
Nairobi News understands Moim’s better half Joseph Asuza, a former volleyball player attached to General Service Unit (GSU) died in a freak accident along the Thika Super Highway in Nairobi as he was returning home after viewing his mother’s remains in the morgue.
Police are yet to release a report on the incident.
Asuza is based in the USA where he is involved in a security gig. He had returned home to help be part of his mother’s send off.
Sources say he was very distraught following his mother’s death but was going on with preparations, including opening a whatsapp group where close friends and families were expected to contribute for the burial preparations as is the norm in Kenyan culture.
Family sources indicate both Asuza and his mother will now be buried on the same day.
Moim is one of the respected volleyballers in Kenya.
Her career spanning more than a decade has led her to compete for Kenya Prisons, where she won several local and continental titles.
She has also enjoyed professional stints in Finland and Azerbaijan before joining KCB in a mega deal.
Moim, who plays as a left or right attacker, has also competed for the national team at the African Cup of Nations, FIVB World Cup and Grand Prix, alongside the World Championships.
