Two suspected gangsters gunned down while robbing motorists
Police on Tuesday evening shot dead two suspected gangsters along Waiyaki Way.
Officers who were on patrol along the busy highway near Brookside Junction some minutes to 10pm noticed four men robbing motorists.
The police, who described the area as notorious for mugging and violent robberies, said they ordered the suspects to surrender but instead they shot at them.
In the ensuing shootout, the police officers shot dead two of the suspects while their two accomplices managed to escape.
A toy pistol and seven mobile phones were recovered from the slain suspects.
The bodies of the suspects were taken to the City Mortuary for postmortem and identification.
