Two suspected thugs shot dead along Kimathi Lane
Police have gunned down two suspected thugs along Kimathi Lane, just behind the Old Mutual building.
The two, according to police were among a group of four that had attempted to rob a woman who had just withdrawn some money from the Barclay Bank, Moi Avenue Branch.
Police say the thugs were members of a gang that is notorious for robbing members of the public just after they withdraw money from the banks in the city.
Central Police station OCPD, Patrick Oduma says the gang had received information and followed the four and when they had surrounded the woman, the police asked them to surrender but one of them who managed to escape drew a pistol and aimed at the police.
“The security officers managed to gun these two and we are following other leads that will enable us to arrest the others” Mr Oduma said.
Upon searching the bodies of the suspects, police recovered four handcuffs, a radiophone, an employment badge belonging to the Securex company and a fake certificate of appointment to the police service.
The two victims were identified as Maurice Ayuke and Stephen Wambua Philip. They have been on the police radar for two weeks.
Mr Oduma said that they had reviewed the CCTV footage from past incidents and confirmed that they were part of the gang terrorizing city residents.
One of the suspects had a robbery case pending before Kibera court and is also suspected to have been behind the killing of a bishop in Ongata Rongai
Cases of robberies have been on the rise within the CBD.
On Tuesday, gunmen shot a shop owner on the right thumb after he wrestled them during a robbery at the shop along Mama Ngina Street. During the incident, a woman was also shot on the cheek by a stray bullet fired by the gunmen as they were escaping.
In another incident on Saturday at around 9am, Mr Rurebwayire Charles, a Rwandan, withdrew US Dollars 16,350 at the Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) and while at the Kencom stage, he was confronted by four men who forced him into a Toyota saloon car.
They handcuffed him and drove with him all the way Mbagathi Ridge in Karen where they tied him with a rope on a fence. They robbed him of the cash and two mobile phones.
He was later rescued by private security guards who were on patrol.
