Ugandan Climate Summit attendee faces backlash for claiming Nairobi is cleaner than Kampala

By Winnie Mabel September 6th, 2023 2 min read

Ms Linda Evelyn Pretty, a Ugandan Water Resources Engineer and climate justice activist, recently faced backlash for wondering why her home city, Kampala, couldn’t be as clean as Nairobi, Kenya.

She is part of a Ugandan team currently in Kenya for the Africa Climate Summit that is set to end today after opening on September 4, 2023.

“Dear Kampala Capital City Authority and Uganda National Roads Authority, if Nairobi city is this clean with such well-constructed roads, why not Kampala city,” asked Ms Evelyn as she shared a photo of a busy roundabout in Nairobi.

In another statement, she said, “Nairobi is such a beautiful and clean city with amazing infrastructures! It hurts me to the core that Kampala can’t relate.”

Her statements elicited backlash from both Ugandans and Kenyans who were sampled by Nairobi News. A section of Kenyans told her she was only visiting ‘Kenya A’ and was yet to visit ‘Kenya B’ where there were several, super dirty and congested slums, garbage on streets, thieves and hawkers setting up anywhere they pleased among several other eye sores.

Some Kenyans went as far as mocking her point of view.

“What I love about it is the clean residential areas. Nairobi river is so clean it has fish and people actually do sport fishing, try it next time!” said James Wakibia.

“Should we tell her or we just leave her!” added Sanguro.

I knew you are not Kenyan the moment I read this Tweet 😅,” opined Zollz.

However, Ms Evelyn’s compatriots had harsher words for her.

“Relocate to Nairobi my dear,” said Rutarwa Fredrick.

Kampala is a beautiful place to be , what’s the meaning of having beautiful roads yet the citizens are extremely poor? @prettylili10. Just know you’re in a country where people are broke. Kampala best,” added HK Haniik.

“Whatever reason you moved from your homeland to Kampala can as well count for you to stay in Nairobi. After all what’s keeping you in Kampala, your ancestors?” asked Ramzy K.

“People like you are the ones causing congestion in our beautiful country Uganda. Vacate to Kenya and create space,” added Mwiza Diane.
