UK looking for Sh15b ‘tax fugitive’ hiding in Nairobi
The United Kingdom tax authority, HN Revenue and Customs (HMRC), is looking for a Briton who is believed to be hiding in Nairobi.
HMRC on Friday appealed for information about Gareth Johnson who is a fugitive and has links in East Africa, especially Nairobi, Mombasa and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
In a paid advertisement in the Daily Nation on Friday, HMRC describes him as one of UK’s most wanted tax fugitives.
Gareth and his father Geoffrey Johnson, both originally from Forfar in Scotland, were part of 18-person gang, according to the post.
Born in 1968, Gareth was due to stand trial in England for multi million pound tax fraud in 2013 but he did not attend court and was sentenced to 12 years in prison in his absence.
Both Gareth and his father were in 2016 ordered by the UK courts to repay Sh15 billion (109 million pounds) of their criminal proceeds or face an extra 14 years in jail.
Gareth’s father was in July, 2017 arrested in Dubai after he travelled to Middle East from Mombasa on a fake passport.
He was deported to the UK and he is now in jail following assistance from the Kenyan authorities.
